A DBeaver alternative that keeps you off production
DBeaver is free, open source and connects to almost anything. Its production connection type asks before writes, and its AI assistant runs the SELECT queries it writes straight away by default. dbplex copies production to your Mac with personal columns masked, so the risky work happens on localhost. You can still open the copy in DBeaver.

Which one fits
DBeaver is the editor that reaches everything. dbplex makes sure what it reaches is a copy.
Pick DBeaver if
- You need a free editor, on Windows or Linux too.
- You use one of its 100 or so drivers that dbplex does not copy.
- You want ER diagrams and data and schema compare in one tool.
Pick dbplex if
- You want to test, migrate and break things on a copy, not on production.
- You want personal columns masked before anyone, or any agent, reads them.
- You want an AI agent that can only ever reach local copies.
- You want saved states, branches and scheduled backups of production on your Mac.
DBeaver and dbplex, side by side
What each does when the database is production.
| DBeaver | dbplex | |
|---|---|---|
| What it connects to | Around 136 database types, production included. | Production, read-only, to make a copy of any of 12 engines. |
| Writes to production | A production connection type that asks before transactional queries, and a read-only switch. | Nothing. It only reads production to make the copy, and has no way to write back. |
| AI and MCP | The assistant runs its SELECT queries at once by default. An MCP server in the Lite, Enterprise and Ultimate editions. | A built-in MCP server whose tools act on local copies only. The agent never sees production credentials. |
| Copying data | Data Migration, table by table. Column transformers can set NULL, a constant or an expression. | One pull of the whole database. Masked as the copy is pulled on Postgres, Supabase, MySQL, MariaDB, Turso, SQL Server and Oracle. You confirm each column. |
| Going back | Not covered. | Save a state and restore it, or branch the copy. Not yet on Supabase, where a backup opens as a new copy. |
| Price | Community is free. Lite is $113 and Enterprise $255 a year. | $12.99 a month, or $79.99 for a year of updates, after 7 free days. |
Questions about DBeaver and dbplex
Can I open a dbplex copy in DBeaver?
Yes. Each copy has a localhost URL in the Connect tab. Add it to DBeaver like any other connection.
Does DBeaver's AI run queries on its own?
Its settings default to running the SELECT queries it writes straight away, and to asking first for writes and schema changes.
Is dbplex free like DBeaver Community?
No. It is free for 7 days, then $12.99 a month or $79.99 for a year of updates.
