A TablePlus alternative for the work you should not do on production
TablePlus is a fine editor, and it connects straight to whatever you give it, production included. Since June 2026 its MCP server lets AI agents open your saved connections and run queries. dbplex copies production to your Mac, masked, so you and your agent work on localhost. Keep TablePlus if you like it: point it at the copy.

Which one fits
They do different jobs. TablePlus is the editor; dbplex makes the copy you edit. Plenty of people will want both.
Pick TablePlus if
- You want a mature editor for many engines, on Windows, Linux and iPhone too.
- You work on ClickHouse, Snowflake, BigQuery or Cassandra.
- You edit rows by hand in a grid.
Pick dbplex if
- You want to test, migrate and break things on a copy, not on production.
- You want personal columns masked before anyone, or any agent, reads them.
- You want an AI agent that can only ever reach local copies.
- You want saved states, branches and scheduled backups of production on your Mac.
TablePlus and dbplex, side by side
What each does when the database is production.
| TablePlus | dbplex | |
|---|---|---|
| What it connects to | Any server you add, production included. | Production, read-only, to make the copy. Then you work on the copy. |
| Writes to production | Five safe mode levels; the default sends queries without warnings. Environment tags and colours help you notice. | Nothing. It only reads production to make the copy, and has no way to write back. |
| AI and MCP | An assistant that runs read queries itself and sends rows to the AI provider. An MCP server that can open saved connections and run queries, with write tokens available. | A built-in MCP server whose tools act on local copies only. The agent never sees production credentials. |
| Personal data | Shown as stored. | Masked as the copy is pulled on Postgres, Supabase, MySQL, MariaDB, Turso, SQL Server and Oracle. You confirm each column. |
| Copying a database | Backup and Restore for the Postgres and MySQL families. The October 2026 release replaces it with Sync Database. | Pull, refresh, save states and branch, on 12 engines. |
| Editing rows | A full grid editor. | Browse tables and run SQL; there is no grid editor. Open the copy in TablePlus for that. |
| Price | $99 a device with a year of updates, $59 to renew. | $79.99 for a year of updates, then $59.99 and $39.99. Or $12.99 a month. |
Using TablePlus with dbplex
- Pull a copy of production in dbplex.
- Copy the localhost URL from the Connect tab.
- Add it in TablePlus as a new connection, and tag it local.
- Give your AI agent dbplex's MCP server, so it reaches the copy and nothing else.
Questions about TablePlus and dbplex
Can I use TablePlus with a dbplex copy?
Yes. Each copy has a localhost URL in the Connect tab. Add it to TablePlus like any other connection.
What can TablePlus's MCP server reach?
Its docs say agents can list your saved connections, open them and run queries. Read-only tokens can read every saved connection, production included, and with approval turned off a read and write token can change data without asking.
Does dbplex replace TablePlus?
Not as an editor. dbplex browses tables and runs SQL, but has no grid editor. It replaces working on production, not the editor you like.
