A Greenmask alternative for people who would rather not script it
Greenmask is a good open source tool: it wraps pg_dump, masks and subsets as it dumps, and restores with pg_restore. You write the config and run the steps. dbplex does the whole round in a Mac app: pull, mask, run the copy on localhost, save states, refresh.

Which one fits
Greenmask is a building block for a pipeline you own. dbplex is the finished thing on one Mac.
Pick Greenmask if
- You want a free, open source command you can run on Linux, Windows and in CI.
- You need subsets that keep every reference intact, or transformers with conditions.
- You keep shared, masked dumps on S3 for the whole team.
Pick dbplex if
- You want a masked copy running on localhost without writing a config file.
- Your database is not Postgres: MySQL, Supabase, MongoDB, Firestore, Redis and more.
- You want saved states, branches, a Refresh button and the migration script back to production.
- You want your AI agent on the copy through MCP.
Greenmask and dbplex, side by side
Greenmask and dbplex, for a masked copy on your own machine.
| Greenmask | dbplex | |
|---|---|---|
| Kind | A command line tool around pg_dump and pg_restore. | A Mac app. |
| Price | Free. The company sells support, and a separate product called Arcave. | $12.99 a month, or $79.99 for a year of updates, after 7 free days. |
| Databases | PostgreSQL; MySQL in beta. | 12 engines. |
| Personal data | Transformers you configure, deterministic if you want. | Masked as the copy is pulled on Postgres, Supabase, MySQL, MariaDB, Turso, SQL Server and Oracle. You confirm each column. |
| Subsets | Yes, keeping references between tables. | Turso only: a sample per table, with every row it points to. |
| After the dump | You restore it into a database you run. | The copy runs on localhost, with a URL to paste. |
| Going back | Restore the dump again. | Save a state and restore it, or branch the copy. Not yet on Supabase, where a backup opens as a new copy. |
Questions about Greenmask and dbplex
Is Greenmask still maintained?
Yes. It had a release in October 2026 and changes in November 2026.
Can dbplex subset a database like Greenmask?
Only on Turso, where you can pull a sample of 1 to 1,000,000 rows per table. On the other engines dbplex copies everything.
Can I use both?
Yes. Greenmask suits CI and shared dumps; dbplex suits the copy you and your agent work on during the day.
