A Replibyte alternative that still ships updates

Replibyte's last release was v0.10.0 in October 2022, and its last code change was in May 2024. dbplex does the job it set out to do, a copy of production you can work on locally with personal data masked, as a Mac app that keeps getting updates.

Which one fits

Both get production data onto your machine with personal data hidden. Replibyte makes a dump you restore; dbplex keeps a running copy you can save, branch and refresh.

Pick Replibyte if

  • You need to run it on Linux, Windows or in CI.
  • You want encrypted dumps the whole team can share.
  • You want to write your own transformers in WebAssembly.

Pick dbplex if

  • You want a tool with current releases.
  • You want a copy running on localhost in one step, not a dump to restore.
  • You need Supabase, Firestore, Redis, Turso, SQL Server or Oracle too.
  • You want to save states, branch the copy and hand it to an AI agent.

Questions about Replibyte and dbplex

Is Replibyte still maintained?

Its repository is not archived, but the last release, v0.10.0, came out in October 2022 and the last code change was in May 2024.

Does dbplex run in CI or on Linux?

No. dbplex is a Mac app for Apple silicon. For CI, a dump step or a seed script is still the right tool.

Can I copy only part of a database?

On Turso, yes: a sample per table, with every row it points to. On the other engines dbplex copies everything.
